VOLUNTEERING As a First Aid Volunteer you will become part of the SDR First Aid Group [A special project group of the SDR Association.] As such you will required to join the SDR Association where in return for a small annual membership fee you will gain many benefits. An interest in Heritage Railways would provide the volunteer with a greater all round experience, however this is not essential as your role would be that of a uniformed First Aider. Should you wish you may well be able to combine your first aid role with another role on the railway say on a different day. |

| In addition to becoming a member of the SDR Association you will also become an Associate Member of Devon EMS, who will be responsible for meeting your training and personal development needs, part of which can include attending various public events with full Devon EMS members in order to gain valuable practical experience. You will be based in the First Aid Unit at Buckfastleigh Station, and in addition to providing First Aid you may well be asked to undertake additional tasks for instance checking first aid boxes on the Buckfastleigh site and down the line. The amount of time you give to this role is very flexible and whilst a valid first aid certificate and previous experience is an advantage it is in no way essential as full training will be provided to a level which you feel comfortable with, this may be in a support role, or up to and including the use of an automated defibrillator and use of medical gases. If you are unsure about "hands on" first aid then there is scope to become part of the group but as a support member, also if you have a qualification in training or assessing then you may be in a position to support us in the training of group members. |
