Devon EMS -  Operational Membership Grades

The theme of Flexible Membership continues with our operational grades, when you become an Operational Member
you will assimileted into our Event - Emergency Medical Team at a particular grade, which will be based upon your
qualifications,  experience, and most important your own wishes.
You will have either the option of becoming an Operational Support Member or Clinical Care Provider.

OPERATIONAL SUPPORT MEMBER

With this role your responsibilites as a direct care provider will be minimal, typically you would be engaged in any of the following roles:-

Driver for our Mobile First Aid Unit.
Radio operator/Devon EMS Control Officer.
Assisting in our Mobile First Aid Unit.
Acting as part of our Duty Management Team

CLINICAL CARE PROVIDERS

Your next choice will be wether you wish to be involved in First Aid alone, where apart from bandages and dressings you will not
use any special equipment or learn any extended skills, or should you wish to use special equipment or have some extended skills
you would go down the Emergency Care route, where in addition to providing first aid you will be in a position to
provide enhanced care should it be necessary.
Additionally there are five levels at which you may practice, the later two requiring recordable or specific qualifications
therefore normally beyond the reach of  lay members.
Individuals who have certain recordable qualifications will be in a position to act as "Clinical Supervisors" supervising clinical care
or acting as "Professional Practitioners" in their own right.

If your interest lies within the field of
first aid then follow the green column, however should your interest be emergency care
then follow the blue column.

               ASSISTANT FIRST AID PROVIDER

EMERGENCY CARE IS NOT AN OPTION AT

ASSISTANT PROVIDER LEVEL
As an "Assistant  First Aid Provider" you will be trained in Emergency First Aid as part of your induction  and work in support of a  First Aid Provider, and  under the  direct supervision of a Provider or Associate Provider.
This represents the base clinical role.
ASSOCIATE PROVIDER LEVEL
EMERGENCY CARE

As a "First Responder" in addition to completing the
Devon EMS - First Aid Course
you will be trained in Intermediate Life Support
including the use of an Automated Defibrillator,
and basic vital signs monitoring.
You will work in support of an Emergency Care Provider.
FIRST AID

As an "Associate First Aid Provider" you will have sucessfully completed the Devon EMS - First Aid Course,
and work in support  of a  First Aid Provider,
but not  under their direct supervision.
You may also provide direct supervision for
Assistant First Aid Providers
PROVIDER LEVEL

As a First Aid Provider you will hold a valid
First Aid at Work [FAW] Certificate, you will be expected
to work without direct supervision up to your
level of competence.

As  a Basic Emergency Care Provider you will hold a valid
First Aid at Work certificate and be trained in
Intermediate Life Support, Entonox Administration,
Vital Signs Monitoring and Fracture and Full Spinal Stabilisation.
With additional training you could become an
Advanced Emergency Care Provider.

ASSOCIATE PRACTITIONER LEVEL
FIRST AID SUPERVISOR LEVEL
First Aid Providers who have operational experience may be asked to undertake the role of First Aid Supervisors,
your duties would include a supervisory role for
Associate First Aid Providers plus managing
the activities of a number of First Aid Teams.
This represents the highest level within the field of first aid,
should you wish to progress further  then follow the
emergency care route.
Should you hold a NVQ3 Care or Assistant Practitioner qualification and meet the criteria as an
Advanced Emergency Care Provider you may be
considered as an "Associate Practitioner"
an alternative qualification would be that of 
IHCD EMT/Ambulance Technician.
PRACTITIONER LEVEL

A a Practitioner your name will appear on a Professional Register and have experience in
Pre-Hospital Care, examples include -

Registered Nurse - a FAW Certificate is not
essential however you must be able to meet the
criteria of an Advanced Emergency Care Provider,
to include a sound knowledge of First Aid.

Registered Paramedic
Emergency Nurse Practitioner
Emergency Care Practitioner
Registered Medical Practitioner
Other qualifications may be considered.
