Devon EMS was formed in 2002 with the aim of providing  Event Medical Care, during 2007 we started to develop a training role,
with all our first aid courses covering the  immediate care for Heart Attack victims.
During 2008 we developed the Devon EMS "Save a Life" Project which combines a 3hr Essential First Aid Skills Course with our
"HEALTHY LIFESTYLES ROADSHOW"
The principle aim of our project being to promote awareness regarding the incidence and risk factors  of
CORONARY HEART DISEASE [CHD] together with the emergency management of heart attacks.
FACT - FACT - FACT - FACT

Coronary Heart Disease [CHD] is the main cause of death in the UK,  accounting for 101,000 deaths per year, 1 in 5 Men and 1 in 6 Women will die from Coronary Heart Disease, and will account for  app 20% of premature deaths in males.
*******
Whilst modern treatment methods have reduced the mortality and morbidity rates of CHD reducing the risk in the first instance
is important, we hope that our ROADSHOW can play a part by:-

*  Assisting in spreading the message regarding healthy lifestyles.
*  Providing education relating to the the risk factors for CHD, and that by effective management of the risk factors the
incidence of CHD can be significantly reduced.
*  Providing "spot checks" for Blood Pressure and Blood Glucose
giving the appropriate advice.
******

RISK FACTORS

*  HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

In the adult age range of 40 to 69yrs for each 20mm/hg increase in the usual systolic blood pressure the risk of CHD is doubled,
raised blood pressure will often go undetected unless checked, hence the reason for offering spot checks and advice.

*  RAISED CHOLESTEROL, BEING OVERWEIGHT , AND SMOKING ARE
ALL SIGNIFICANT RISK FACTORS.

*  RAISED BLOOD GLUCOSE [Sugar]

In adults a raised blood glucose level can be an indication of underlying Type 2 Diabetes which can often go undetected or
may lead later in life to Diabetes unless  Lifestyle Changes are made in particular where there is a family history of
Type 2 Diabetes.

Over 2 million adults have been diagnosed in the UK with diabetes, by 2010 it is expected that this figure will have increased to nearer 3 million, in men there is a a two to fourfold increased risk of developing CHD if you have diabetes, whilst in females there is a
three to fivefold increased risk.

In the presence of Diabetes the effective management of other risk factors becomes even more important, therefore
early detection of this condition plays a vital part in the battle against CHD.
